Importance of the Gurudwara

A Sikh will go to a Gurudwara for every major life event, from birth to death. As the faith consists of prayers and services for each of these key milestones.

Birth: A supplication is made, and a message from Guru Granth Sahib Ji is shared with the congregation. The first letter of the first word in that message is used as the first letter of the child’s name.

Dastar tying: This largly applies to young males who will have their first dastar (turban) tied in the presence of Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

Amrit Sanchaar: the initiation ceremony into the Sikh faith generally occurs from the age of 11 upwards. The individual is baptised by the 5 beloved ones within a closed ceremony. Within the ceremony the individuals acknowledge Guru Granth Sahib Ji as their eternal Guru.

Marriage: The marriage ceremony consists of four verses being recited and sung, and the couple walking around the Guru Granth Sahib Ji four times as a commitment to keeping the Guru at the centre of their marriage, as they progress together on the path of spirituality.

Death: At a funeral the deceased is brought to the Gurudwara as a farewell to the Guru before being cremated. Services are also held in the Gurudwara for the soul.
